Arbroath Skatepark dream comes alive after years of campaigning

Construction work on the Arbroath Skatepark Project is under way, four years after the campaign began.

Perthshire contractor Alex Butter Landscaping has arrived at the site, marking the start of the construction phase.

Jillian Low, who has led the project since its inception, said: “Today marks a momentous occasion for our group and indeed the whole of the local wheeled sports community.

“I’ve walked past the site many times and visualised the skatepark; now I don’t need to imagine any more.

“I’m really excited that it’s actually happening now and can’t wait to see the finished park.”

The total cost of the project is £202,000, of which £100,000 is coming from the Scottish Government’s Active Places fund, set up to build or upgrade sport and recreation facilities around next year’s Commonwealth Games.

A huge community response raised the last £27,000 of funding required in two months before the deadline earlier this year.

“I’m so pleased that all the young people involved in our group can see their patience and hard work come to fruition too,” Jillian added.

“They will be able to continue to be involved throughout the construction phase, as the contractor Alex Butter is keen to invite small representative groups on site regularly for inspection and comments.

“In his opinion, listening to the users and taking their comments on board will ensure the success of the build.”

Angus Council has also made a financial contribution and its parks team worked alongside the skatepark committee to bring the project into fruition.

The construction phase is expected to last for around 12 weeks and the skatepark organising committee is planning to hold an opening event on October 4.
