Arbroath student overcomes adversity to compete in athletics contest

A student who could not run at all a year ago has competed in his first athletics championships.
Steven Scott, from Arbroath, could hop and skip but not run when he started the Sport Fit course at Dundee and Angus College.
The class helped the 20-year-old, who has learning difficulties, build up his strength.
He recently took part in a 60-metre race at Tayside Athletics Championships for Athletes with a Disability at Caird Park Stadium in Dundee.
Lecturer Wendy Duke said: “The class is about learning through fitness and exercise.
“It focuses on the fundamentals of movement which are balance, coordination, agility and speed.
“We built it up from power walking with a focus on extending out his legs, then jogging and sprinting.
“We did resistance training and building up the strength in the right muscles.”
Fellow student Ravi Sangeelee, 24, won the 1,500m race at the event. He will compete in the Scottish Disability Sport National Athletics Competition Finals in September.
