Hundreds of homes in Angus were affected by discoloured water after a burst water main near Friockheim.

The fault on a trunk water main in Middleton was discovered and isolated on Monday, with the repair carried out on Tuesday.

The burst stopped production at Strathmore Foods in Forfar on Tuesday. The factory is expected to be back up and running on Wednesday.

A Scottish Water spokesman said: “Following a burst on a trunk water main near Friockheim , some customers in the Forfar area may have experienced discoloured water.

“This can sometimes happen following a burst water mains although the water is safe to drink.

“Our advice to customers in these circumstances is to run a cold tap at reduced pressure until it runs clear.

“No customers are believed to have been left without water as a result of this burst.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Factory staff at Strathmore Foods’ Carseview Road plant were sent home for the day.

Julie Nisbet, managing director of Strathmore Foods, said: “On doing our daily start up checks prior to production starting it was noted there was sediment coming through our main water supply.

“A decision was made that production would not commence until all pipes were thoroughly disinfected and tested to British Retail Consortium requirements.

“We are confident to be back up and running on Wednesday.”
