Firefighters were ‘stork’ for words after a dramatic call saw them become morning midwives in Stonehaven.
A local mum-to-be contacted emergency services just after 9am when alarm bells began to ring that baby was on its way.
The Scottish Ambulance Service asked their emergency partners to assist in gaining entry to the woman’s home and when the local crew burst through the doors just a few minutes later they found the woman in the late stages of labour with the baby’s head already showing.
Without having time to think, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crew manager Gavin Strachan, 31, and 19-year-old firefighter Tim Hull helped successfully deliver a baby girl.
Also at the scene were firefighters Matthew Crabb, Neil Innes and driver Alex Gordon.
A local doctor and nurse arrived shortly afterwards and both mum and daughter were taken to hospital by ambulance.
The unusual call-out was very much a family affair for the fire crew as the watch manager in charge was John Strachan, Gavin’s father.
