Forfar Air Cadets are aiming to bring new recruits on board after a hi-tech addition to their training armoury.
A civilian committee meeting of 2231 (Forfar) Squadron saw former chairman and group stalwart Bill McLaren take the controls of a new flight simulator which offers the young cadets the opportunity to test their skills in a realistic flying experience.
The superb educational tool was provided to the squadron by generous donations through Mr McLaren’s association with the Nine Trades of Dundee and Alan Hampton of the Forfar Roof Truss Company.
Graeme Hammond, a private pilot and civilian instructor with the squadron, is using the simulator to teach cadets the basics of flying, including use of the controls and navigation.
The group is hoping the attraction of the new kit will help safeguard the survival of the group, which is facing a struggle to recruit cadets and adult staff.
Recently launched was the squadron’s website, www.forfaraircadets.org, which is run by the cadets as part of a PR project.
The squadron, open to 13 to 17-year-old boys and girls, meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9.30pm at its Brechin Road HQ in Forfar.
