Forfar locals say Reid Park not safe after dark

Residents have been left angered following a fresh spate of vandalism at a Forfar landmark.

They say they have had enough of vandals wreaking havoc in Reid Park after a section of its bandstand was damaged for the second time in a month.

Just three weeks after crews were brought in to reinstall one of the Victorian bandstand’s specially-made side panels, yet another section has been torn off.

Officials say repair costs could be £300-£400 and will likely take weeks, but residents argue their efforts to maintain the Victorian park’s focal piece is only half the battle.

“I don’t think many people feel safe in the park any more once it gets dark,” said Mary Johnston, 63.

Datjana Keirane, 31, said she thinks the park may no longer be a great daytime destination for visitors either.

“There’s broken glass all over the place, it’s too dangerous.

“Every time they come and clean it up, the next morning there is even more.”

Forfar Community Council leader Isobella Ross said it was a shame to see locals being chased away from the park.

Over the last decade the town has devoted more than £50,000 towards extending and renovating Reid Park, which was gifted by confectioner Peter Reid in 1897.

A police spokeswoman said officers had been made aware of this latest act of vandalism in Reid Park and were making inquiries.
