Fuse lit on Arbroath bid to bring back fireworks

Karren Cuthil has issued a rallying cry for locals to get a community fireworks display back on track for next year.
Karren Cuthil has issued a rallying cry for locals to get a community fireworks display back on track for next year.

Angus residents dedicated to bringing a community fireworks display back to Arbroath are on track to form an official group next week.

Fireworks for Arbroath held its second meeting at the Meadowbank Inn and recorded an “encouraging” turnout ahead of committee elections next week.

There were early doubts after a poor turnout at the first meeting.

But a closed meeting will now be held to vote in a committee on Wednesday at 6.30pm in Chalmers.

“The main thing coming from the meeting is that we had 16 people there and most are in a position to be on the committee,” said organiser and mum-of-one Karren Cuthill.

“I have also had several others, really good people, who had shown interest for the committee who could not attend.

“I want to thank everyone for getting behind us.

“The next meeting is for people who have shown interest in being on the committee with a view to getting it formed.”

During the latest meeting, group members came to the conclusion charitable status would not be needed, so long as fundraising is for one event.

Members discussed local examples of well-run events elsewhere in Angus, such as the display organised by Edzell Village Improvement Society, and the Carnoustie display by the Coastguard Association.

Although those displays offer spectacular events, Karren said there is obvious public appetite for Arbroath fireworks and a bonfire.

At the meeting she said: “If Edzell can do it, and they are community-run, then why can’t we?”

In recent years, the fireworks evening in the town was organised by Arbroath Events, which held a sign-off spectacular last year.

Member and local councillor David Fairweather wished the new group well. He estimated around £6,000 would be needed for any future event.

At the meeting he said: “I’d like you to see what it takes to put on such a large event. I’ve brought along a list of 20 items you’ll have to look at and see what needs to be done to make this happen.

“Anything you need as a committee, I’ll be more than happy to help.”
