Photos show lorry making ‘illegal and stupid’ turn at Laurencekirk junction

Images of a lorry carrying out a “crazy manoeuvre” at a Mearns accident blackspot have sparked fury among junction campaigners.

A driver waiting in a queue of traffic in heavy rain took the images and posted them on the A937/A90 Junction Campaign Facebook page.

They show the lorry crossing the central reservation at Laurencekirk, blocking the southbound lane and undercutting a vehicle waiting to pull out.

The Facebook page is regularly updated by locals with tales of dangerous driving or near-misses at the notorious junction.

Florist Jill Fotheringham, who has led the 10-year campaign for a flyover, said: “Photographs have been put on the junction’s Facebook page this weekend, which, although shocking, are now becoming a normality of some of the crazy manoeuvres we are having to see here.

“They show a lorry crossing, blocking the southbound lanes of the A90 and completely undercutting a vehicle already waiting in the central reservation.”

Ms Fotheringham said major developments and new housing in the Montrose and Laurencekirk areas have also played a part in increasing congestion.

Proposals were recently submitted by Aberdeen firm John Lawrie for a 50-hectare business park at the former RAF airfield in Montrose.

Ms Fotheringham said the development would bring more HGVs and cannot be allowed to go ahead unless the junction gets a flyover.

Charles Gordon, a former HGV driver, said the lorry’s manoeuvre was “illegal as well as stupid”.

It is the understood the lorry involved in the manoeuvre was a foreign company although identification could prove difficult due to the conditions.

Montrose councillor David May said: “One of the major problems with the junction is crossing for heavy goods vehicles.

“It’s okay if they can cross it in one go but so often they get stuck in the fast lane of both sides of the dual carriageway.

“It’s a serious accident waiting to happen.”

Last year a Mearns coach driver was sacked following a similarly “outrageous” manoeuvre at the blackspot.
