Police called to 230 incidents following suicide concerns in Angus

Angus police attended 230 incidents in which people were considering suicide last year.

According to Inspector Ally Robertson, the county’s deputy area commander, his officers can speak to several people a week who have indicated they may kill themselves.

Mr Robertson spoke out about the extent of the issue in Angus after emergency services were called out to deal with five incidents over the course of three days.

He said: “It is certainly true to say that officers in Angus will probably speak to someone every day they are concerned is considering suicide.”

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, his officers were involved in three incidents of concern at Arbroath cliffs alone.

In two of the cases, the inshore lifeboat was called out along with police and coastguard rescue teams.

Police and coastguard teams were later alerted by a lifeboat crewman who had concerns for a man in the area of the cliffs.

“I am very proud of the work all my officers do when dealing with distressed people who are contemplating suicide,” Mr Robertson said.
