Suspended Arbroath High School head teacher faces police charges

Police have charged an Angus secondary school head teacher at the centre of an investigation into alleged inappropriate behaviour on a school trip.

The Courier understands Gillian Rew is now the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal seven weeks after her suspension as the head of Arbroath High School.

The former depute rector of Morgan Academy, Dundee, did not return to her post after the Angus schools’ autumn holiday following her suspension over allegations of drunken behaviour during a sixth-year trip to Lockerbie in September.

Mrs Rew was among staff accompanying the group on the adventure weekend, which was a reward for pupils’ performance during the year, and it is understood she became the subject of a complaint about her behaviour in front of youngsters at an early stage in the weekend.

Angus Council previously confirmed a member of staff at Arbroath High had been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation into an alleged incident, but did not identify Mrs Rew as the figure involved.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a 47-year-old woman has been charged in connection with an incident on September 21 at Lockerbie.”

The nature of the charge facing Mrs Rew has not been revealed by police.

However, The Courier understands it does not relate to the supply of alcohol to minors.

A spokesman for Angus Council said: “We can confirm that a staff member is currently suspended and will not be making any further comment as it is a police matter.”

The council was asked if it had passed the matter to police as a result of the authority’s own investigation into the circumstances leading to the suspension, but declined to comment.

Mrs Rew has not been available for comment.

Following her suspension pupils used social media to speak highly of their regard for the head teacher.
