Animal lovers seek justice after cat thrown out of moving car in Dundee

Shocked animal lovers have started a campaign for justice for a cat which was thrown out of a moving car window in Dundee last week.

More than 1,000 people have joined a Facebook campaign page, Justice For Annie, a week on from the incident which took place on Clepington Road.

The eight-month-old moggy died as a result of her injuries and the incident was witnessed by Cats Protection member Anne Steele and her companions who reported it to the police.

Linda Quinn, one of the first on the scene after the incident, managed to trace the owners through her missing pets page.

She said: “Annie was a much loved pet and her owners are devastated at what’s happened.

“They saw the story in the paper, contacted the police and then went to identify the little one.”

The public outcry after the shocking death has led to the campaign group appealing for information and calling for tougher sentences for animal cruelty.

Linda says she wants to be a voice for animals and has been lobbying local politicians calling for a change in animal welfare laws to allow harsher sentences.

Currently the offence of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal can result in a maximum financial penalty of £20,000, or up to one year in prison.

Those convicted can also be banned from keeping animals, under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland’s Tayside Division said: “Police have made inquiries but no one has come forward with further information.

“Should anyone else come forward with information we will look into that.”

Anyone who thinks they may have information can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
