Bike accident victim delighted to get chance to thank her rescuer

A woman who was hospitalised after a nasty bike accident has been able to thank her rescuer after a public appeal.

A very grateful Deborah Miller was reunited with Jim Butchart, who came to visit her with his ex-wife Ange, after finding her injured on Wednesday.

Jim stepped in to help after Deborah was rushed to hospital with a broken arm and suspected concussion after the accident on the cycle path at Dundee docks.

Deborah was desperate to thank him and after a social media appeal and an article in The Courier, she got her wish.

She said: “He was a lovely man. It was really good to be able to say thank you in person. He was very humble about what he did but I think he did a great thing.”

Jim had been teaching his six-year-old grandson to cycle with his daughter and Ange. There were also two young men at the scene when they came to her aid.

Deborah said: “The two young lads were trying to help but were panicking so Jimmy and Ange took over, calling the ambulance and sitting with me.

“Apparently my arm was twisted in the wrong direction and the bone was sticking out. It must have been quite distressing.

“Apparently I just came on to the pavement awkwardly and that’s all it took for me to come off the bike and for all this to happen incredible.

“I had to get staples all down my arm after the operation. I’ve also got bruises down the side of my face but nothing life-threatening.”

Deborah is due to participate in the Rat Race Coast to Coast charity challenge in September but isn’t sure if she will be able to take part after her injury.

Nicola McLean, the paramedic who tended to her, has also been in touch, posting on her social media appeal: “It’s nice to witness this kind of generosity of spirit. Jimmy was one of life’s truly generous people.

“I am the paramedic who attended you the other day. I hope you are doing OK and on the road to recovery.”
