Broughty Ferry hoping weather plays along during gala week

Family fun at last year's Broughty Ferry Gala fete.

Broughty Ferry Gala Week 2015 is almost here, so get ready for seven days of fun!

Now in its 83rd year, the seaside town’s popular event kicks off with Broughty Gala Day this Sunday and runs until July 12.

On gala day, good old-fashioned family fun takes centre stage. Highlights include the children’s fancy dress competition, pipe band parade, live music, Radio Tay roadshow, traditional fete games, fresh food from local suppliers, a fire engine, face painting, charity stalls, fairground attractions and for the grown-ups the beer tent.

The weather also looks like playing its part, with plenty of sunshine forecast among the occasional shower.

Entry to the fete is free but a bucket collection and fundraising activities raise money which is donated to local charities, including the Broughty Ferry lifeboat.

It’s been a great year for the Ferry community, with record attendance at the key events, including last year’s gala day and Christmas lights night, a nomination for best neighbourhood in the UK from the Academy of Urbanism, a peak in the number of Traders’ Association members and the launch of new website www.cometobroughty.co.uk.

These successes are due to the tireless enthusiasm of volunteers who give their valuable time to their community.

Gerry Stewart, chairman of the Broughty Ferry Community Gala Committee said: “We have even more events than ever, so more people can come along to join in all the fun.

“We want to see a really large turnout, the more people who appear, the more money and support the traders can give to local charities.

“I must thank all my helpers, organisers and most importantly, all my many friends who have worked so hard in order to make this one of the best Gala weeks ever!”

Mr Stewart also expressed thanks to all sponsors, including Dundee City Council and main sponsor Graham Baird of Belhaven Brewery.

He said: “We’re looking forward to a wonderful summer in 2015 and to welcoming lots of Ferry folk and visitors to our Gala Week.”
