Call for calm after parents see red over parking at Craigowl Primary School

Parents have been urged not to take the law into their own hands after a row flared up over parking outside a Dundee primary school.

Following the incident Craigowl Primary School asked parents to consider where they park when dropping off and collecting their children.

A letter sent to parents said: “There has been a report of a confrontation between parents at the school gate regarding parking on the pavements and yellow zig-zag lines.

“Please don’t park in an illegal and dangerous way.

“Consider the safety of all children coming to and from our school.”

Stewart Hunter, Dundee City Council education convener, said: “This school is in my own ward, so I know a lot of the issues with parking around it.

“It has been an issue in the past and I had thought it had been resolved.”

He continued: “There is a small minority across the city who think they can park where they want when the fact of the matter is it is putting children’s lives at risk.

“If you are a parent who is doing this, then I would say to you that you need to put children’s safety first.

“Situations like these almost always begin with one parent parking in a stupid place where it could put children’s lives in danger when they are crossing the road.

“Then another parent will ask them to move because they might be putting the safety of their children at risk.

“We need a little bit of common sense from some parents.”

The Strathmartine councillor said parents who have an issue with the parking situation should report it to the authorities rather than take matters into their own hands.

Mr Hunter added: “I understand that if parents think that their kid’s life is at risk they want to react and do something about it.

“The best reaction is to go to the school and report the matter.

“They can report problem parking to the school, to the council or, if they feel strongly enough about it, the police that is the best way to deal with it.

“Confronting the person could result in an escalation and that doesn’t help the matter.”
