Celtic fans fined for Tannadice pitch invasion during Scottish Cup tie

The trio all admitted acting in a disorderly manner during the match at Tannadice.
The trio all admitted acting in a disorderly manner during the match at Tannadice.

Three supporters who climbed onto the pitch during a match at Tannadice were fined at Dundee Sheriff Court.

James Graham, 34, Steven Walters, 41, and John McFarlane, 25, all admitted acting in a disorderly manner.

The court heard the incident took place on March 8, during a Scottish Cup quarter-final between Dundee United and Celtic match.

Fiscal depute Trina Sinclair said: “Around 5pm a goal was scored by Celtic and a number of supporters climbed over a wall and entered the track side of the pitch. Police officers took immediate action and the three accused were arrested and taken to police headquarters.”

An agent acting on behalf of Graham and McFarlane said: “All three accused were sat in the front row of one of the stands.

“When the goal happened they went on to the track side and were immediately stopped by stewards so they didn’t make it on to the playing area or grass. It was a misplaced decision and they recognise there was potential for disorder.”

Walters was asked by Sheriff Di Emidio to explain his reason for committing the offence and said: “When the goal was scored there was a surge. Everyone behind us pushed and we had to go over the wall or we would have fallen over.”

A police report, however, said the accused’s actions were in “celebration of the goal”.

Graham, of Denmilne Street; Walters, of Dunskaith Place and McFarlane, of Eskford Street, all Glasgow, admitted conducting themselves in a disorderly manner at Tannadice Park by climbing over a wall, running on to the football pitch while a match was being played and committing a breach of the peace.

Sheriff Di Emidio fined Graham and McFarlane £400 each and Walters £200, saying: “I’m not going to impose a football banning order as I am convinced there was nothing malicious or dangerous about what you were doing.”

On the pitch, the match was heated with three players sent off.
