Dundee businessman claims he was victim of anti-Yes road rage

A supporter of the “Yes” campaign has claimed he was the victim of “referendum road rage” when a female driver gestured rudely to him before almost forcing him off the road.

Dundee businessman John McGurk said he was driving his young sons to school shortly before 9am on Wednesday in his white people carrier, when the woman apparently took offence to the Yes campaign flags and stickers all over it.

John, who owns Versity Laptops in Guthrie Street, said he was appalled at the woman’s actions after she gave him the rude gestures then made him swerve violently to avoid striking her car when she drove in front of him.

He said: “I was driving along Balgillo Road with my sons Jack, 4, who goes to nursery and Jamie, who is 12 and autistic. He goes to Grove and my older son John was also in the car, he’s 16.

“We were coming up to the junction with Marlee Road and a woman driving a beige Honda Civic was gesticulating furiously and then as we got near the junction she deliberately jolted forward into the road then slammed on her brakes.

“I had to brake hard and swerve into the other carriageway. I pulled into the side of the road and started shouting at her, but she just stared straight ahead and took off quickly.

“I admit I was swearing at her but I was so annoyed. I’m convinced it was because my car is covered in Yes stickers and flags.”

John, 53, added: “I suppose you could say that narrow-minded people might say I was setting myself up for being targeted. But it shouldn’t be like that, I’m just expressing my opinions.

“I’ve had my car scratched as well and I’ve had a coin thrown at me.”

A spokesman for the Dundee SNP group said: “This has been a long debate, people have their own views which they are perfectly entitled to express and we would hope that good behaviour and courtesy would prevail at all times.”

A spokesman for Police Scotland confirmed the incident had been reported to them and said they would be investigating the matter.

Anyone who witnessed the incident can contact them on 101.
