Dundee has made its mark as one of the UK’s top five most cultural cities.

Dundee trumped its UK City of Culture 2017 competitor and eventual winner Hull by more than 30 places in a new survey.

Analysis of 50 British cities with a population of more than 50,000 ranked Dundee fifth in the UK, seeing off such cultural heavy hitters as London, Glasgow and Manchester.

The survey compares the number of Grade 1 Listed Buildings, Michelin Guide restaurants, theatres, museums and cinemas per 100,000 people.

Dundee’s City of Culture rivals trailed behind in the survey, with Leicester in 34th place, Swansea in 38th and Hull in 39th. Dundee City Council leader Ken Guild said: “The people of Dundee continue to express their pride in the city especially one with such great culture and ambitions.

“This poll reflects this and it is very much welcomed.

“Dundee is a fantastic place to live and work and its cultural facilities act as a magnet for visitors.

“We are constantly looking to build and improve our cultural identity and we’re undergoing a massive transition, with regeneration works being carried out across the city.

“Our £1 billion waterfront project is going to be spectacular. It will definitely be a must-see attraction for Scotland especially with the arrival of the V&A.”
