Hilltown family fear risks of dirty needles left in their stairwell

Drug addicts found shooting up in a Hilltown stairwell by a young couple with their four-month-old baby left their filthy needles behind.

The grim discovery came after experts tackling the city’s drug problem appealed to the public for more information about discarded needle dump sites.

Peter and Jo-Anne Wemyss were startled to find illicit drug taking in their tenement close as they tried to take their pram downstairs on Sunday afternoon.

Jo-Anne said: “The minute I saw them I went back up with the pram and phoned the police. I didn’t want to get involved.

“They were there for ages, about 10 to 15 minutes, as we could hear them through the intercom.”

Peter added: “After they left a neighbour shouted up the stairs and I came down to find two dirty needles, two wee silver things and used wipes.

“I removed it as there are children in the block. We’ve got four kids, aged 16, 13, 12 and our four-month-old baby and there’s a 13-year-old boy upstairs.”

Jo-Anne said she is worried of a return to the situation when she first moved in back in 2006.

She said: “It used to happen all the time. Every day people were doing something in the closie, then it stopped for a few years. About three months ago it started up again with someone going to the top of the close.”

At that time the couple disturbed the man and he left without taking drugs.

Dundee’s Drug-Related Litter working group has been reconvened after complaints about the risk it poses to the public.

Environment convener Craig Melville, who is also leading the working group, said: “We will be working closely with partner agencies, particularly the police but it is important that members of the public report any needles they find.

“The Hilltown, like any other area, is monitored by police and community safety wardens employed by the council. If there is an increase in reported finds there will be an increased response.”

A police spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the matter and are looking into it.”
