A Hilton hotel is on its way back to Dundee city centre.
The prospective return of the famous brand has been hailed by an industry leader who said it would enhance the range of hotels available for the city’s growing numbers of business and tourism travellers.
The £6.5 million Hampton by Hilton franchise would be on the site of the redundant Argyll House and Waverley House office blocks at West Marketgait.
Plans have been lodged and The Courier understands they have been well received by the city council who are keen to bring more hotels to Dundee.
The £1 billion waterfront redevelopment crowned by the V&A Design Museum is predicted to open a decade of leisure and tourism spending.
Consultants identified the need for an additional 500 new hotel beds to accommodate the increase in demand, and said five new hotels could be needed.
Hilton closed its Earl Grey Hotel 18 months ago as the site was needed for the waterfront project and was looking for a new central location.
West Marketgait has been chosen and Alison Henderson, interim chief executive of Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce, said: “This is very good news and if this can happen I would welcome the Hilton brand back to the centre of Dundee.
“Hilton is a well-known and reputable brand and this will add to the range of hotels available in Dundee for all categories of visitors.”
