How Dundee helped Mad Max out of a jam

Dundee has long been renowned for jam, jute and journalism but it appears only one of the three Js will survive the apocaplypse.

An eagle-eyed Courier reader spotted a jar of the city’s famous Keiller’s Marmalade in a shot of the original Mad Max film.

Shotin Australia in 1979, the spread’s bizarre cameo may have been an early example of product placement, but it certainly proves the international popularity of Dundee’s produce.

Reader Donald Suttie said: “Mel Gibson, near the start of the movie is fixing something inside the engine, while others are involved in a high speed pursuit.

“While Max cleans his hand, a tub of hand cleaner is in fact a Keiller’s Marmalade pot seen on the roof of his car.

“Up until recent times, this was hard to spot, but with recent HD transfers you can see this is in fact a jar from Bonny Dundee.”

Despite its low budget, the original Mad Max remains a cult favourite and is responsible for setting Mel Gibson on the road to stardom.
