A Dundee law firm has called for more decorum in the kitchen after claims staff at the city’s Malmaison Hotel were subjected to sexual and racial harassment.

Lawyers Ryan Russell and John Muir say it should be less Gordon Ramsay and more the Mary Berry in hotel and restaurant kitchens.

They were speaking after confirming four former members of staff at Malmaison Dundee are taking the hotel to an employment tribunal, claiming harassment by other members of staff.

Mr Russell told The Courier if their claims are upheld, the behaviour of those being accused will “truly shock” people.

The solicitors issued a joint statement that read: “Employers today face a minefield of legal obligations.

“They should not make things more difficult by allowing themselves or their staff to be influenced by TV reality shows such as Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, in which Chef Ramsay bombards his staff with foul and abusive language.

“They would be better advised to take their lead from others, such as Mary Berry, who presents a far more balanced approach.

Although the hotel has been open for less than a year and none of the parties can claim constructive dismissal, the applications for compensation are being made on the grounds of harassment and unwanted contact.

The applicants, all from the Dundee area, are Liam Elder, Helen Byrne, Laura McRobbie and Surej Avtar.
