The Dundee community has rallied to pay for the funeral of a homeless woman from Lochee which will take place on Tuesday.
Pauline Smith would have had a council funeral, known as a pauper’s funeral, after she collapsed and died in a High Street shop last week aged just 55.
However, a community-funded funeral campaign has seen people digging deep.
Pauline was well known on Lochee High Street where she sold newspapers from her specially made kiosk.
She also took part in a number of charity events, including shaving her head, to raise money for cancer charities.
Catherine Lawson, who organised the page, said although Pauline had very little, what she did have she gave to charity.
She said: “We’ll never know the mark we’ve left behind when we die, but the generosity of people shows Pauline certainly left her mark.
“I want to thank the people of Dundee for their generosity. The people of Dundee are just marvellous.
“Some of the stories I have heard about her have really touched me.”
Posting on the fundraising page Angie Rourke said: “RIP Pauline Such a caring and compassionate person…always thinking about other people. Will miss all the chats we used to have when you came back into town xx”
The Lennon Fund said: “Our own charity held a pop-up shop in Lochee the last two weeks and although we did not know Pauline for long she was in our shop most days and had a good blether with her, so sad RIP Pauline.”
Yvonne McHugh said: “Pauline’s presence in and around Lochee will be sorely missed by all who knew her.”
Some of those who donated said they had never met Pauline but had put their hands in their pockets anyway.
David Stapley said: “Never met the woman but touched by the story. Fantastic effort by the Lochee community.”
Pauline’s funeral service will take place at the crematorium at 2pm on Tuesday, with a wake afterwards in Lochee Parish Church at around 2.45 to 3pm.
