Lord provost pulls some slick moves ahead of Grease dance-along in City Square

Dundee’s lord provost Bob Duncan has rock n’ rolled back the years to prove that Grease is still the word.

He donned the leather jacket, jeans and hairstyle made famous by John Travolta to promote a dance-along showing of the hit movie on a giant screen set up in City Square for the Commonwealth Games.

The public are being invited along to the free event on Saturday at 6.45pm as part of the Get Scotland Dancing initiative, a strand of the cultural programme running alongside the Games.

Kenny Christie, from the city council, said Grease had been chosen as it was a family favourite that features many well-known songs, not least of which is the appropriately titled Summer Nights.

He said: “We will have dance performances in the square from 4.30pm and then a warm-up for the audience led by choreographer Chris Stuart-Wilson. Whether you want to jive or just hand-jive, everybody can take part.”

The lord provost, who admitted to wearing a leather jacket in his younger days, will be coming along and he said he wanted to see a continuation of the “amazing atmosphere” in the square, where hundreds people have been stopping to watch live coverage of the games.
