Make a stand against cancer at Dundee Relay for Life

Teams of all ages are being urged to sign up for an overnight charity relay in Dundee next month.

The Relay for Life is one of Dundee’s biggest community events which helps raise funds for Cancer Research UK’s groundbreaking work.

Dozens of men, women and children have already signed up for the overnight celebration which will take place at the Ronnie McIntosh Athletics Stadium over the weekend of August 23.

The charity hopes to attract as many people as possible and organisers are encouraging anyone who would like to enter a team to sign up as soon as possible before time runs out.

During Relay For Life, team members take it in turns to walk round a track while everyone else enjoys the carnival atmosphere.

As the Relay continues non-stop through the night, team members not on the track take turns to rest, eat, or sleep in their tents, which are set up close by.

Hazel Feilder, volunteer chairwoman of Dundee Relay For Life committee said: “Relay for Life is an all-inclusive event that gives people the chance to get together with their family, friends, colleagues and community to give people more birthdays.

“Everyone knows someone who has been touched by cancer.

“Taking part in Relay For Life is a positive way to be part of your local community and help make a stand against cancer.”

Participants are asked to raise as much money as possible in the weeks leading up to the event.

The range of fun activities taking place at the event are not limited to teams taking part but are open to the whole community and help raise further funds.

One of the more poignant moments is the Candle of Hope ceremony when specially made bags decorated with touching messages, in memory or in celebration of loved ones, are filled with sand and lit up with candles around the track.

Hazel added: “We would love to hear from anyone who wants to find out how they can get involved. It doesn’t matter if they haven’t fund-raised before.”
