A broken bus pass was used as a weapon in a daylight slash attack in Dundee city centre.
David Ditchburn, 40, of no fixed abode, admitted the assault in the Murraygate on Saturday.
Dundee Sheriff Court heard the 37-year-old victim had been sitting outside Tesco at 2.30pm when he was approached by Ditchburn who, while heavily under the influence of alcohol, challenged him to a “square go”.
Depute fiscal Eilidh Robertson told the court the victim refused, at which point Ditchburn pulled what appeared to be a broken bus pass-like object from his sock.
She said: “Using the sharp edge the accused dragged it down the side of his face leaving a 1cm cut by the side of his ear.
“The man was sitting underneath a CCTV camera and shouted that he had been assaulted, which was picked up by police who sent officers to the scene.”
She said Ditchburn was still heavily under the influence when he was traced, and police found him in possession of half a bus pass.
The victim was also traced, identifying Ditchburn as the man who had slashed him.
Ditchburn also admitted behaving in a threatening and abusive manner during the incident and to assaulting a police officer at police headquarters.
Ms Robertson said: “While en route to police headquarters he said: ‘As soon as I’m out, I’m going to kill him’.
“As police tried to get him to leave the police vehicle, he was resistant and when they tried to get handcuffs on him, the accused took hold of one of the officer’s index fingers and dug his nail in, causing the skin to break.”
The court also heard Ditchburn’s position was that the complainer had been one of a group of people who had assaulted him previously.
Defence solicitor John Bruce said Ditchburn had a problem with alcohol.
Sheriff Hughes said custody was inevitable given Ditchburn’s record and sentenced him to eight months in prison.
