Motorcyclist suffered serious injuries because of his careless driving

A Broughty Ferry man who was seriously injured crashing his motorbike while trying to overtake another vehicle has been fined £200.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard Martin Caird was off work for nine weeks after the incident in the Fife village of Balmullo.

The 38-year-old also had his licence endorsed with five penalty points by Sheriff Kenneth Hogg after admitting a charge of careless driving.

Depute fiscal Trina Sinclair told the court Caird had sustained a number of serious injuries in the crash, including a broken rib, ruptured spleen and a punctured kidney.

Jim Laverty, defending, said his client had to be given a blood transfusion following the incident and was in a high dependency unit due to the serious nature of his injuries.

Mr Laverty said: “It was a moment’s intention on his part with a horrendous outcome. He was in hospital for a number of days and was off work for nine weeks as a result.

“He was driving his motorcycle on a 60mph road that turned into a 30mph zone and climbing down through the gears to reduce speed.

“The other vehicle was in front of him and he did not see it indicate to turn and he clipped it. He is an employed man and drives for a living.”

Caird, of Gillies Place, admitted driving without due care and attention, attempting to overtake another vehicle which was turning right into a junction, colliding with the offside of the vehicle, mounting the pavement and colliding with a wall at Main Street, Balmullo, on April 18.
