Old pub mirror could inspire rebirth of Dundee’s Ballingall’s Beer

A photographer’s visit to an Edinburgh pub could lead to the resurrection of a former Dundee icon.

Oliver Pilcher is trying to resurrect Ballingall’s Beer, which used to be made in his home town of Dundee until the brewery was shut down in 1968.

He said: “I found an old mirror in a pub while drinking in Edinburgh and it got me doing some research and I discovered that this brewery, which was big at one point, has disappeared.

“There’s very little on the web and it only exists in the brewing archives at Glasgow University.

“So I thought it would be worth a go to get it started again, given the current boom in craft brewing and the popularity of real ales.

“I also thought it would be nice for Dundee to have its own brewery again.”

Oliver has now trademarked the name Ballingall’s and is looking to find places to produce and bottle the beer.

He added: “The basis of the idea is to create a brewery that would be to Dundee like Newcastle Brown Ale is to Newcastle however, the difference being that all the profits of the brewery would go back into sport and the arts in Dundee.”

If Ballingall’s does make a return to pubs in Dundee it will not be the city’s only beer.

Business developer Sean McMahon and brewing expert Sean Gowans of Eden Mill Brewing are setting up the Hawkhill Brewery Company with premises in Sugarhouse Wynd.

They hope to produce 3,200 litres of beer a week and eventually open their own on-site bar.
