Podcasting is poised to be the next breakthrough creative industry in Dundee, says a digital entrepreneur.
Colin Gray, from The Podcast Host, a start-up company he founded in the summer, said the city is well-positioned to become one of the UK’s podcasting hubs in the same way it established itself in the video games market.
In the wake of the success of the Serial podcast, which followed a journalist’s investigation into the murder conviction of an American student, the new company is on the hunt for young talent through its scholarship programme.
The scheme offers £400 of funding and support to winning students.

Mr Gray, who was given an Enterprise Fellowship by the Royal Society of Edinburgh to help him set up the company after completing a PhD at Abertay University, said: “Podcasting is a funny thing it’s been around for about 10 years but it’s never really gone mainstream.
“It’s had a few difficulties with the technology and getting subscribers, but in the last six months advances have been made and it’s been given a boost by shows like Serial.
“A lot of people had not heard about podcasts, but now they have and we have the potential to have a really thriving scene in Dundee and Fife.”
Encouraging students to come forward, he added: “We hope to get some students with some really creative ideas and a bit of time on their hands to produce something that really makes a splash.”
