Dunfermline town centre is to become a 20mph zone.

The aim of the scheme is to make the area safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

Fife started introducing 20mph zones in 2004. Two years later the Viewfield Terrace and Comely Park area in the town centre became a 20mph area.

Then, in 2008, High Street, Douglas Street, Queen Anne Street, Guildhall Street and Chapel Street were placed in an order. Although that order was made, it was not implemented because the positioning of gateway signage proved problematic, as the area was too small.

However, there are two cycle routes being built through the town centre which use New Row and Priory Lane and adjoining streets to give a safer route from Pittencrieff Park to Dunfermline Public Park so Fife Council plans to introduce the 20mph zone.

This will cover streets including Chalmers Street, Bridge Street, Bruce Street, St Catherine’s Wynd, Kirkgate, Maygate, Abbot Street, Canmore Street, Bonnar Street, James Street, East Port, Commercial School Lane, Walmer Drive, New Row, Skibo Court, Abbey Park Place, St Margaret Street, Monastery Street, Buchanan Street, Priory Lane, Moodie Street, Kirklands, Reid Street, Edgar Street and Rolland Street.
