Another two RBS branches to close in Fife

The Royal Bank of Scotland is to close two more branches in Fife, it has confirmed.

Its premises in Lundin Links and East Wemyss will shut in October due to a drop in customer numbers.

The news follows an announcement last month that RBS branches in Markinch and Thornton will close in September.

The announcement was greeted with dismay in the affected communities.

Councillor Tom Adams criticised the lack of consultation and called on the bank to think again.

Mr Adams, who is chairman of Fife Council’s Levenmouth area committee, said the East Wemyss branch had been threatened with closure several years ago but was saved after a hard-fought campaign, albeit on a part-time basis.

“It’s disappointing for the area that we’re losing two branches,” he said. “They should not be closing. The bank should be thinking again.”

Fellow councillor Jim Young, who lives in East Wemyss, said it was disappointing the village would be left with another empty building on the main street.

An RBS spokeswoman said the number of transactions taking place at the Lundin Links branch, which is only open for eight hours a week, fell by 39% in recent years with only nine customers now using it on a weekly basis.

In East Wemyss, where the branch is open for 15 hours a week, transactions have dropped by 11% with only 28 weekly customers.

“Over our whole branch network there has been a 30% drop in branch transactions since 2010 as people do their banking where and when it is convenient for them, whilst online and mobile transactions have grown by over 200%,” she said.

“We expect these trends to continue as more and more of our customers bank with us through our mobile app, by online and telephone and through our upgraded ATM network.”
