Sabrina Roberts and Kevin Mercer tied the knot at Dunfermline Abbey before a reception with family and friends at the Dean Park Hotel, Kirkcaldy.

A couple who feared their big day was in tatters have enjoyed a dream wedding.

Sabrina and Kevin Mercer thought they might have to cancel when their reception venue closed suddenly.

But the date was back on when Dean Melville, the owner of another hotel, stepped in and offered to host their party free of charge.

On Friday the Lochore couple, who have six sons, tied the knot at Dunfermline Abbey then celebrated with a no expenses spared do at Kirkcaldy’s Dean Park Hotel.

Kevin, 34, said they were “over the moon”.

He said: “If it wasn’t for Dean and the Dean Park Hotel we probably would have had to cancel the wedding.

“We were gutted when the Strathearn Hotel closed. We had put all our savings into it.

“This is miles more than we could ever have dreamed of.”

Several couples were left without a wedding venue when the Strathearn Hotel, in Kirkcaldy, shut suddenly in May.

Mr Melville, managing director of Kingdom Taverns Group Ltd, was touched by Sabrina and Kevin’s plight.

When he told Sabrina, 36, who suffers from neurological condition Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, he wanted to give her the wedding of her dreams, she cried tears of joy.

He said: “I genuinely felt really sorry for all the people who had given money to a failing business and I wanted to save someone’s day.

“When I told Sabrina, it was quite emotional. She asked if she could give me a cuddle and wouldn’t let go!

“It has been so nice to do something for a couple who really deserve it.”
