Fife Council chief makes ‘bedroom tax’ plea to Swinney
ByMichael Alexander
The leader of Fife Council, Alex Rowley, has called on Finance Secretary John Swinney to take urgent action to help mitigate the “inhumane” effects of the so-called “bedroom tax”.
Mr Rowley has written to Mr Swinney, and every MSP in Scotland, calling for cross-party support to the national No2bedroom Tax Campaign petition submitted to the Scottish Parliament.
Mr Rowley believes that by political parties of different persuasions working together, Scotland can take a meaningful stand against the policy before the problems deepen for those already struggling to survive on low incomes.
His comment comes a week after his Labour council administration passed a motion backing the No2bedroom Tax Campaign’s request for the Scottish Government to make approximately £50 million available to mitigate the impact of the spare room subsidy changes.
