Freuchie dashcam video shocker shows ‘You take your life in your hands at this junction’

Motorist Gordon Blair captured the near miss on his dashcam.
Motorist Gordon Blair captured the near miss on his dashcam.

A motorist is thankful to be alive following a near miss, which he caught on camera, at a notorious junction.

Gordon Blair was passing Freuchie on the A92 when a van shot out of a junction in front of him.

The driving instructor reckons he was only three seconds from possible death.

His shocking dashboard camera footage has prompted outrage among Facebook users who have watched it in their hundreds.

It has also fuelled the campaign for improvements to the Cross Keys junction, one of several blackspots on the A92 that campaigners want to see addressed.

Just last month a young tractor driver was jailed for causing the death of a pensioner when he emerged without stopping or checking properly from the nearby Kettle junction another of the locations people want made safer.Mr Blair, of Baldinnie, near Ceres, said that had he not slowed slightly behind two cars turning right at the Kettle junction seconds before, the blue Transit van would have smashed into him.

He told The Courier: “I don’t think I would have been here to talk to you today.

“Luckily it was me who was driving goodness knows what would have happened if it was a learner. It could have put them off driving for life.”

Gordon said the van looked like it was going faster than the 20mph speed limit as it crossed the A92 from Freuchie High Street to Freuchie Mill Road.

He said: “This is a blind junction. You have to stop and even then it takes you time to see.

“This driver had absolutely no thought or regard for anyone’s safety.”

Freuchie Community Council secretary Patrick Laughlin said he hoped to add the video to evidence being compiled to compel the Scottish Government, Transport Scotland and Bear Scotland to take action.

However, he said the near miss was nothing new to local residents.

He said: “Those of us who live in Freuchie see this type of thing literally every day.

“There are near misses and minor bumps and scrapes that don’t appear on any records or in statistics because the police are not involved.

“Frankly, it’s amazing there have not been more serious injuries and fatalities.

“You take your life in your hands at this junction.”

A wish list of improvements for the A92 have been drawn up, including alterations at the Cross Keys junction, a reduced speed limit, pedestrian crossing and a roundabout at the Kettle junction.
