Hotel du Vin opens its doors in St Andrews after £3.5 million revamp

The Hotel du Vin opens after a £3.5 million revamp.

The former St Andrews Golf Hotel has reopened as Hotel du Vin.

Run by the same group as Dundee’s Malmaison, the upmarket Hotel du Vin chain now has 15 hotels across the country, including in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Chief executive officer Gary Davis said some finishing touches were still being completed on Monday but the hotel would be ready to welcome guests this morning.

He said: “We’ve got 20 golfers coming in at 10am. We’re opening in time for the start of the golfing season and in a great location.

“The hotel will be something St Andrews can be proud of.”

A total of £3.5 million is to be spent redeveloping the building. The first phase, now complete, involved refurbishment of the bedrooms, bar and restaurant.

Work to add a new accommodation block to boost capacity from 22 to 40 will continue into the summer and is expected to be complete by August.

The project is Mr Davis’ second on Tayside, following the opening of the delay-hit 91-bed Malmaison hotel on Dundee’s waterfront.

However, the firm made light of the problems, joking on its website that the new venue was “worth waiting for” and adding that “you can’t rush genius”.

The group was bought by Denver-based KSL Capital Partners for a reported £180 million in March last year after parent company MBW Group collapsed into administration.

Mr Davis has since revealed his ambition to expand the reach of both the Malmaison and Hotel du Vin brands into Europe and the US, as well as throughout the UK.

He aims to agree six new Hotel du Vin sites and three more Malmaison locations this year, while also eyeing opportunities in Scandinavia and cities like Chicago and San Francisco in the US.

Mr Davis is also looking into the possibility of adding a new Hotel du Vin in Aberdeen to the company’s portfolio, alongside the Granite City’s existing Malmaison site.
