‘It’s become a nightmare’ Fife pensioners living in fear as youths turn street into ‘war zone’

Mrs Hindley, who served with the army, says the area has become hellish.

Pensioners are at their “wits end” after being targeted by youths “running wild” in Cardenden.

Elderly residents of Orebank Road say their evenings have become “hellish” after being plagued by antisocial behaviour problems.

The Courier was contacted by former army clerk Patsy Hindley, 73, who compared it with a war zone.

She said: “The Mao Mao couldn’t kill me when I spent three years in Africa.

“The terrorists couldn’t kill me when I spent two years in Saudi Arabia.

“But at this rate these kids are going to kill me.

“It’s become a nightmare. A sad state of affairs.”

Mrs Hindley said elderly residents had raised concerns with Fife Council, the police and their local MP, but to no avail.

With the lighter evenings returning, she said the problem had got worse with under-age drinking and smoking.

She had recently collected 26 empty vodka bottles from the side of her garden.

She said: “We fear for our safety.

“The other night a big heavy chain about 4ft long was lobbed over the fence that separates us from this astro-pitch about two feet from our garden.

“This heavy object could have hit either one of us, causing us serious injury or killed us.

“We need help before one of us are carted off to hospital.

“We need help to fight for our very existence.”

She added: “We would like our lives back and not be afraid to go out in our own gardens for fear of getting hit with football or the missiles they toss over.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police in Fife are investigating following a report of antisocial behaviour in the Orebank Road area of Cardenden.

“The incident was report to police on Tuesday evening.

“Enquiries are currently ongoing.

“Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Police Scotland immediately on 101.”
