Leuchars set to keep its airshow

Speculation is mounting that Leuchars will keep its annual airshow.

A source at the Ministry of Defence claimed the show, which regularly attracts more than 40,000 visitors to the Fife base, was “likely” to remain at Leuchars for the “foreseeable future”.

Only weeks ago the Fife RAF station confirmed it would stage the show as usual this September, shortly before Typhoon fighter jets and RAF personnel are due to relocate to RAF Lossiemouth.

However, it was stressed that no decision had been taken on whether this year’s spectacular would be the last seen in the skies above the region.

A spokesman for RAF Leuchars said: “I can confirm we are having an airshow this year.

“No decisions have been taken on its future.”

However, it is thought there could have been a rethink after Defence Secretary Philip Hammond announced that runways at both Leuchars and Kinloss would be kept operational by the RAF despite their handover to the army.

The retention of the runway at Leuchars would mean there was no need for the RAF to find an alternative home for the airshow.

RAF Lossiemouth had been tipped to take over as hosts of the UK’s last remaining Battle of Britain extravaganza. The famous event has been held at Leuchars since 1945.

RAF Lossiemouth will be Scotland’s last remaining air base when up to 30 Typhoon jets and 400 air force personnel transfer to Moray from Leuchars later this year.
