Madras College backers accuse Pipeland opponents of scaremongering

Parent Voice says the group recently exceeded 1,000 online followers and support continues to grow as design images of the new school have been revealed.

Supporters of a new Madras College at Pipeland say opponents should stop scaremongering.

Parent Voice, the group campaigning for a new school in St Andrews, has described graphics of how the new Madras would look as “inspirational”.

The group criticised a petition raising concerns about the potential impact the new school would have on St Andrews Community Hospital.

A spokesman for Parent Voice said: “These design images leave no doubt that this new school will be a truly inspirational place, fit to take its place in the long history of educational excellence in St Andrews and to give thousands of young people a fantastic start in life.

“There can be no doubting the strong support for this new school in the community, as our group recently exceeded 1,000 online followers and support continues to grow.”

In response to a Freedom of Information request submitted by Parent Voice, NHS Fife has said there are no plans to expand the community hospital.

The spokesman added: “As far back as March 2014, a spokesperson for NHS Fife confirmed in response to a direct inquiry from us that the board were ‘not in opposition to the provision of a school adjacent to the hospital campus’.

“Parents said they had a straight question for those behind the petition.

“How many of the people who signed were explicitly told that the NHS had no objections, and no current or future plans to expand the hospital, before they signed? If they weren’t told, how many would change their views in the light of that information?”

The petition now has 1,500 signatures and is set to be handed to Fife Council leader David Ross on September 12.

Resident Moira Cubie, who started the petition, said: “It’s not scaremongering. It’s just pointing out the difficulties we see for people at the hospital and also the residents living around it.”

Mrs Cubie highlighted research which suggested exposure to road traffic noise could reduce life expectancy.

She added: “There will be an increase in traffic because of the school, buses and hospital.”
