‘Magnificent’ move for Glenrothes social club all but signed and sealed

David Nelson said the move to the new premises is all but signed and sealed and that redevelopments could start as early as next month.
David Nelson said the move to the new premises is all but signed and sealed and that redevelopments could start as early as next month.

A Glenrothes social club will move to its new home next year, its management has revealed.

Ciswo, one of the town’s oldest institutions, will move from its current base on North Street to nearby South Street in January.

It is taking over Fife Council’s social work building, which will be re- developed into a modern, larger club.

The move has been prompted by plans for a new retail and leisure complex in Glenrothes town centre, with Ciswo relocating to allow the development to take place.

Speaking on behalf of the club, David Nelson told The Courier the agreement was all but signed and sealed.

“Everything is agreed now,” he said.

“I’m going to the new building next week to verify things and then we’ll be able to begin the moving process.

“It will probably be January of next year before we move in, but redevelopment could begin at the end of this month.”

“The whole thing is magnificent news for us and really means a lot to the members.”

The social work building is significantly newer than Ciswo’s existing premises, the site of which will be transformed into a retail and leisure park featuring shops and restaurants.

Marks and Spencer, Frankie and Benny’s and KFC are just some of the names already attached to the complex, which was granted planning permission in February.

As well as a games room and community meeting facilities, the social club would also feature a 574-capacity hall, allowing Ciswo to build on its reputation for national darts events.

However, the move will see the club lose its bowling green, with members having to share with Dovecot Bowling Club at Auchmuty.

Last weekend Ciswo hosted one of the biggest events on the British darts calendar, the BDO British International Championships.

Sold out for three days, Mr Nelson said moving to the new building will make the event bigger and better.

“The darts was great this year,” he added

“We were sold out for all three days and it will be even better when we move.”
