‘One thing led to another’ Miniature village built from rubbish is becoming a big attraction

‘One thing led to another’ Miniature village built from rubbish is becoming a big attraction

They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and that’s certainly the case for Robert Elder.

Using odds and ends people have thrown away, he and his colleagues at Pittenweem Recycling Centre have created an entire model village.

Dolls’ houses are surrounded by toy cars, a lighthouse and a miniature railway.

There is even a toy boat sailing in a canal and an airport runway, complete with aeroplanes.

The display, which staff tend during breaks and after work, has transformed a corner of the Fife Council tip and cheered up a visit to the dump for people of all ages.

Robert, 60, of Buckhaven, said: “This all started as we had a bit of waste ground and when a dolls’ house came in I suggested we could put it there.

“One thing led to another.”

The first house proved so popular that someone decided to take it home.

To prevent further thefts its successors have been weighed down with cement.

People arriving to deposit rubbish love to pause as they drive round the centre for a glimpse of Robert and the team’s handiwork.

The recycling plant attendant said: “Kids come and have a look with their mums and dads and so many people stop to look.

“It’s great although, it does hold the traffic up sometimes.

“All the houses and the little boat that sails back and forth have been put out by people.

“There are flowers that have been chucked out and bits of old Christmas trees.

“The only thing that’s not been thrown out are some of the plants that we’ve put in ourselves.

“It is unbelievable what people throw away.”
