Selfless Iona goes without birthday presents to help out animals in need

A kind-hearted schoolgirl went without birthday presents to help an animal rescue centre.

Iona Robertson asked guests to her ninth birthday party to bring donations for the Scottish SPCA instead of gifts.

The Balmerino Primary School pupil even asked her parents to sponsor a child in Malawi instead of buying her the latest must-have toy.

Iona was described as a “superstar” by staff at the Scottish SPCA’s Petterden centre and her mum Amanda said: “I am incredibly proud of her.

“She said she didn’t need anything, therefore it was a good opportunity to do something for people and animals who are worse off.”

Iona celebrated her big day at the village hall near her Gauldry home and was delighted when friends arrived with food and toys for dogs, cats, guinea pigs and rabbits.

She later took her haul to the Scottish SPCA’s rehoming centre in Dundee and met some of the animals she had helped to feed.

Amanda said: “She is chuffed to bits and they were delighted with what she handed over.”

Iona came up with the idea just after Christmas when she was discussing with her mum, dad George and sister Ailsa, 7, what she wanted to do for her birthday.

Amanda said: “She said she wanted a disco and perhaps she would do something for charity. She had already asked us to sponsor a child and we started to talk about what the options were.”

Iona’s generosity was praised by the Scottish SPCA.

The centre’s assistant manager, Dale Christie, said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to Iona for her kind and thoughtful gifts.”
