A popular Highland Perthshire venue marks its first anniversary this weekend.
Little over 12 months ago, the Birks Cinema in Aberfeldy was still a disused building, left rotting in the centre of the town.
Now it is a vibrant picture house and a community hub, attracting visitors from across Scotland. To celebrate this remarkable transformation, the cinema will host a week of festivities.
They will start on Friday night with the premiere of Blue Ruin, a thriller directed by Jeremy Saulnier, and continue with a screening of Royal Conservatoire Shorts on Saturday and the first showing of Australian drama Tracks on Sunday.
Younger film fans are also invited to the Little Birks birthday party on Monday, which will feature Brave and an Easter egg hunt.
Actor Alan Cumming, patron of the Birks Cinema, has also become involved in the celebrations by choosing his favourite film, Brief Encounter, for a special screening on Monday.
Other highlights include Atonement, the British Museum’s popular Vikings exhibition and a Casablanca Gala Evening.
General manager at the Birks Cinema, Fiona Sloan, said: “It’s hard to believe that we are already at the end of our first year.
“What a year it has been, with a huge amount of community involvement in what is truly a community venture. Everybody at the cinema would like to thank all who have supported us and look forward to welcoming even more visitors through our doors in the years to come.
“The board members and staff have done an amazing job but nothing which has been achieved here would have been possible without the support the local and wider communities have shown us.”
Last used as a cinema in the 1980s, the building was at the centre of a major fundraising effort to secure £1.8 million to bring it back to its original use.
The project captured the imagination of the local community, as well as attracting Hollywood film star Cumming as its patron.
The cinema now boasts a 101-seat screen with a digital system, the capacity for live broadcast links and a caf bar.
