GP drove into cyclist while facing drink-driving charge

A doctor knocked down and injured a cyclist just days before he was due to appear in court to face a drink-driving charge.

Locum GP Dr Robert Mawdsley reversed out of his driveway and knocked Peter Wakely off his bicycle, causing him injury.

The accident happened at the doctor’s home in Glasgow Road, Perth, on April 22 while he had a separate drink-driving offence hanging over his head.

Perth’s Justice of the Peace court heard on Thursday that Mawdsley had subsequently been banned from driving for a year.

He admitted driving carelessly and injuring Mr Wakely.

Mawdsley was fined £250 by Justice Linda Thomson and had five penalty points imposed on his licence at the conclusion of his current ban.

The accident happened a week before Mawdsley appeared at Perth Sheriff Court to admit driving while he was more than twice the alcohol limit.

He had been caught driving on icy roads on March 28.

On that occasion, he told the court that he had felt safe to drive despite drinking at a function earlier in the evening.

Police had spotted him driving erratically on his way home.

The doctor, whose partner was in the car at the time, was banned from driving for a year and fined £333 by the sheriff.
