‘He must know’ Faithful companion’s graveside vigil has echoes of Greyfriars Bobby

Tyke found his way to Mr Hendrys grave despite not being taken to the funeral.

A faithful Perthshire gun dog has become a modern-day Greyfriars Bobby since his owner lost a long battle with cancer.

Greyfriars Bobby was a Skye terrier who became known in 19th Century Edinburgh for spending 14 years guarding the grave of his owner.

Now, more than a century later, the phenomenon is being repeated with another dog showing his devotion to the master he lost six months ago by spending hours beside his gravestone. Every day since David Hendry died in February, 12-year-old Labrador Tyke has sat patiently at his grave, refusing to come inside unless put on a lead.

Mr Hendry who died aged 53 chose the burial site on the Cardney Estate, near Dunkeld, which he spent years managing and renovating.

His daughter, Katriona Cameron, 30, said: “Tyke was very much a one-man dog. He was completely loyal to my dad and would go everywhere with him.

“We didn’t take him to the funeral but he must know, somehow, that my dad is buried there. If you gave him water and food, you could leave him there for ever and he would be quite happy.”

Tyke used to accompany Mr Hendry on shoots and recently took a dead chicken to his grave. Katriona believes he was trying to do his job just like old times.

When Tyke dies the family plans to bury him in a plot next to his beloved master.
