Locals shocked to see hot air balloon come down in Perth

The balloon touches down.
The balloon touches down.

A hot air balloon landed in a children’s play area just yards from a busy road in Perth.

The Virgin balloon, with 11 passengers on board, was flying over Perth on Saturday when it made the unexpected landing.

Witnesses said it had been flying fairly low over the city centre before the incident.

Dave Crookshanks said he was out walking his dog when he saw it.

He added: “It was doing an early morning flight which I’ve never seen before. It was flying low across the rooftops.

“I saw it land in a kids’ playpark only 100 yards by 100 yards wide, narrowly avoiding a busy road.”

The balloon landed on Glenearn Road, near a junction with Edinburgh Road.

He added: “It’s just amazing he managed to land it in that tiny field.”

A vehicle which tracks the balloon while it is in the sky quickly attended the scene where it came down.

A spokeswoman from Virgin Balloon Flights said: “Both the flight and landing of our Perth hot air balloon on Saturday morning were completely normal … Our 11 happy passengers had a thoroughly enjoyable flight, helping to pack away the balloon at the end before enjoying the traditional post-landing champagne toast and going on their way.

“Our hot air balloons are a regular sight above Perth city centre during the summer and fly in both the morning and the evening.

“Unlike aeroplanes, hot air balloons cannot be steered in the traditional sense but travel in the direction of the wind, so do not land in designated spots.

“When the flight is coming to an end, our pilots will land where they see a safe, open space and, if necessary, then gain permission from the landowner before removing the balloon.

“Due to their size, our balloons often cause great excitement and are an impressive sight when coming in to land.”
