A lodger arrested by police probing the mystery death of a Perthshire jeweller has appeared in court, accused of stealing his car. A murder investigation was launched after 49-year-old Alan Gardner was found dead at his home in Balbeggie. Indian takeaway worker Nikloa Zhulev appeared in private at Perth Sheriff Court to face an allegation that he had stolen Mr Gardner’s car. His arrest followed a public appeal by police on Friday, the day after Mr Gardner’s body was discovered. Police said they wanted to trace the dead jeweller’s blue Toyota Rav4, which was thought to have disappeared from outside his home. The car was later found, apparently abandoned, several miles away in nearby Perth. Zhulev, from Perth, appeared on petition before sheriff Fiona Tait. He made no plea and was remanded in custody. Fiscal James Eodonable said he was likely to make a second appearance next week.
