Missing Susan McLean: Police still hopeful of finding US tourist alive and well

Police remain hopeful of finding “alive and well” an American woman who has been missing for two days in Highland Perthshire.

Susan McLean disappeared from a holiday cottage at Moness Resort on the outskirts of Aberfeldy on Sunday evening.

The 61-year-old horse riding instructor from Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania, arrived in the village on Friday to begin the second week of a fortnight-long family driving holiday.

She was last seen at 7.45pm on Sunday.

Officers from Police Scotland, accompanied by Tayside Mountain Rescue, moved their search from the resort and village to the surrounding area.

Tuesday’s hunt covered the rougher countryside, including the Birks, the golf course and hospital grounds.

The Police Scotland helicopter was also used.US tourist ‘no stranger to the outdoors’ In photos: Teams search for missing US tourist Susan McLeanChief Inspector Ian Scott said: “It’s now the best part of 48 hours since Susan was last seen it’s out of character and unexplained.

“There are concerns that she may be lost or injured.

“Although there has been inclement weather over the last two days we are still very much working on tracing Susan alive and well.

“There is no indication at this stage of any criminality.

“The family remain in the area and they are obviously struggling to come up with an explanation for what has happened and are concerned for Susan’s wellbeing.

“She has some ongoing health concerns but nothing too severe.”

He added that officers are making door-to-door inquiries and asked local residents to check their sheds and outbuildings in case Mrs McLean has taken shelter inside.

CCTV footage from local businesses was being scoured and an image of Mrs McLean was released in a bid to jog memories.

Mr Scott said: “We are urging people to check their properties to make sure things are normal and there’s nothing untoward or any sign of Susan.”

Mrs McLean’s husband of 43 years, Donald, and her two sons, Donald and James, are assisting officers.

When last seen Susan was wearing a black and grey waterproof jacket, beige khaki trousers and white trainers.

She is described as being 5ft 8in, of medium build, with short fair hair and green eyes and has an American accent.

Anyone who may have seen Mrs McLean or remembers someone with an American accent who matches her description is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 or speak to any officer.
