Perth man to miss his wedding after being remanded on shop theft charge

A groom is to miss his own wedding after being thrown in the cells.

Gavin Blair appeared at Perth Sheriff Court accused of theft from a city centre shop.

Despite a plea from his solicitor to allow him his liberty so the wedding could go ahead on Saturday, Sheriff Lindsay Foulis remanded him in custody until his next court hearing.

Solicitor Steve Lafferty, acting for Blair, told the court that Blair’s nuptials were imminent.

He added that the 39-year-old had taken steps to address a drug problem.

“He tells me he is engaged and his wedding is scheduled for Saturday,” said Mr Lafferty. “He has had a problem with drugs and entered a Christian rehab centre in Hexham in October for a short time.

“He tells me he is now drug-free. He is now working as a self-employed joiner. He denies committing this offence.”

Sheriff Foulis told Blair: “Your record tells me that you are at risk of reoffending, therefore you will be remanded in custody.”

With the date for his next appearance set for December 3, he will be forced to miss the ceremony.

A visibly disappointed Blair was led from the dock to the cells below the court.

Blair, of Scott Street, Perth is accused of stealing a quantity of alcohol from Marks and Spencer in the city centre on November 23 this year.

His trial has been set for December 21, with the intermediate diet taking place on December 3.
