Dozens of school pupils learned about the art of news reporting in a freshers’ session at Blairgowrie High School.

I was given the honour of showing the S1 pupils how to write a headline and story, how a newspaper is made up and what makes a good news photograph.

The class was part of an inter-house competition to produce the best newspaper front page, with children writing about a recent visit to the school by the Royal Marines.

Jenna Simpson said she found the project “very interesting”.

“It’s interesting seeing how a newspaper goes together I didn’t think it would be such hard work,” she said

Nicola Ross, the school’s acting deputy head teacher, added: “I think they reacted to the session very well. It’s opened up their minds to what happens in a newspaper.”

The children were also given a safety talk by crew members from the fire station.

Firefighters from Blairgowrie gave the pupils a demonstration of the dangers of pouring water on a chip pan fire.
