A major gymnastics tournament is to take place in Perth later this month.

The 2016 Scottish National Gymnastics Championships at the Bell’s Sports Centre will feature competitors from as far afield as Sweden.

The two-day event will begin on February 27, and organisers hope it will inspire a new generation of world-class athletes.

Among those competing is Olympic bronze medallist Daniel Purvis, whose mum hails from Dundee.

He said he hoped being on home soil would inspire him to victory.

“Returning to Scotland always feels like being at home,” he said.

“It’s well known that I have been regularly visiting my Dundee-based family since I was born and I’ve made many friends all across Scotland through my sport.

“I think it’s these strong links that have helped me to perform well in Scotland in the past because I always feel comfortable and encouraged by the home support.

“2016 is going to be hugely demanding because of the Olympics and the ‘battle of the Brits’ to be part of that team.

“Every competition now counts and it’s important that things get off to a good start in Perth at the end of February.

“Confidence is crucial going forward to the British Championships and so I will be hoping to have a steady clean competition in Perth.

Daniel, who will be aiming to secure his third successive senior title, will compete with a host of Scottish Commonwealth Games stars as more than 100 competitors gather at the Bell’s Sport Centre.

Sam Langstaff, Scottish Gymnastics’ head of performance, said: “The 2016 championships are set to be an exciting event fans will get the opportunity to watch some of Scotland’s most talented gymnasts including Daniel Purvis and Amy Regan.

“I hope these gymnasts will inspire a new generation of future world class gymnasts.”

On the Saturday, individual all-round titles will be won as gymnasts compete on all pieces of apparatus.

The following day, the top eight gymnasts on each apparatus will battle it out for individual apparatus medals.

Tickets are available from www.scottishgymnastics.org or on the door.
