War veteran and football scout Neil Clark

The daughter of a popular football scout who lost a leg during the Second World War has paid tribute to her “selfless” dad after he passed away at the age of 92.

Neil Clark, from Dundee, made his name during a 30-year career which saw him work with the likes of Blackpool and Nottingham Forest.

Mr Clark, who helped finalise Colin Hendry’s move from Dundee to Blackburn Rovers in 1987, passed away last week.

During his career he teamed up with Fife-born former Blackpool manager Allan Brown to source and recruit talent for the Lancashire club.

The father-of-two also enjoyed spells with Nottingham Forest and Derby County before finally retiring in 1993.

Before beginning work as a scout, Mr Clark served as a paratrooper during the Second World War, where he lost a leg after standing on a land mine.

His daughter Valerie, 62, has paid tribute to her father, who she first attended matches with back in the 1960s.

She said: “Before he became involved with football my dad worked as a police wireless operator.

“But he always had an interest in football and became friendly with Allan Brown, who was the Blackpool manager during the mid-’70s.

“My dad went on to work as chief scout with Blackpool from 1975-1977 and also spent time working with Nottingham Forest, with whom he worked alongside Brian Clough.

“His last position was with Derby in 1992, but he continued to scout until about 10 years ago.

“My dad was very friendly with Colin Hendry and played a part in his move from Dundee to Blackburn during the ’80s.”

Away from the football field, Valerie said her dad was devoted to his family.

She said: “My dad could be strict at times, but he lived for his family and for his job.

“He would do anything for anyone. If he saw someone in trouble he would always try to help them.

“I used to attend a lot of football games with him when I was young and we were close.

“He was active right until the end of his life, though he had some issues with mobility.

“I will miss him greatly.”

Mr Clark’s funeral will be held on Friday at 11.45am at Dundee Crematorium.
